FAQs

We know that choosing a care home can raise a lot of questions. Our team is here to provide advice and support, so you feel confident in making the right decision. Below are some frequently asked questions to help guide you.

Can I bring my pet to live with me?
While pets are welcome to visit, permanent arrangements vary by home. It’s best to speak with the Home Manager to discuss if your pet can stay with you long-term.
What happens if my funds run out while I’m in care?
If your savings fall below the capital threshold, you may qualify for local authority funding. We recommend requesting a care needs assessment from your local authority well before this happens to avoid any delays.
Do you offer room service?
Yes, we offer room service at no extra charge. Friends and family are also welcome to join you for meals at any time.
Can I visit the care home before deciding?
Absolutely. We encourage multiple visits at different times of day to get a feel for the home’s environment. If you’d like to meet with the Home Manager or take a tour, booking in advance is a good idea to ensure availability.
How do I know whether I need residential or nursing care?
Residential care is suitable for those who need help with daily activities but don’t require ongoing medical care. Nursing care is for those who need regular support from qualified nurses for medical needs. Your GP or local authority can help you make this decision.

Will I need to sell my home to pay for care?
If you live alone, your home may be included in the financial assessment. However, if a spouse or dependent remains living there, it will not be considered an asset. We advise speaking to a financial expert to explore your options, such as renting out your home.
What activities do you offer?
Our activity coordinators organise a wide variety of events based on resident interests. These include everything from arts and crafts and music sessions to gardening and day trips. We also offer tailored activities for residents with dementia to ensure everyone can participate in a meaningful way.
How is my income assessed for care funding?
Your local authority will assess your income, including pensions and savings, but won’t take into account the income of your family members.
Do you have double rooms for couples?
Yes, we have double rooms available for couples or close companions who wish to live together. Contact your chosen home for more details about availability.
What are the visiting hours?
We have an open-door policy, so family and friends are welcome to visit at any time that suits them and their loved ones.
What is deprivation of assets?
Deprivation of assets refers to when someone intentionally reduces their wealth, for example, by giving away property, to qualify for financial assistance with care. If the local authority believes assets have been transferred deliberately, they may still include them in the financial assessment.
What happens if I give away assets to qualify for care funding?
If the local authority suspects assets were given away to reduce your capital for financial gain, they may still consider these in their financial assessment, which could affect your eligibility for funding.
How are care costs determined?
The cost of care varies based on your needs, the type of care required, and the location of the home. Our team can provide guidance on pricing, and we offer options for both long-term and short-term stays.
Do I have to pay extra for activities and entertainment?
No, activities and entertainment are included in your care. We believe that staying engaged and social is essential for well-being, and all our events are planned with residents’ interests in mind.
What if my care needs change over time?
If your needs change, our care pathway homes offer flexible options that allow you to transition to a higher level of care, such as nursing or dementia support, without moving to a new location.
Can residents spend time outdoors?
Yes, all our homes have outdoor spaces such as gardens or terraces where residents can enjoy fresh air. For those in dementia care, secure outdoor areas are available to ensure safety while outside.
What types of care do you offer?
We offer residential, nursing, and dementia care, as well as respite care for short-term stays. Some of our homes also provide specialist support for younger adults with disabilities.
How do you determine the staff-to-resident ratio?
We assess each resident’s individual needs and ensure there are enough staff to provide the right level of support at all times. This is done through personalised care plans that reflect the requirements of each resident.
How is food provided at Holmes Care Group?
Our chefs prepare fresh, nutritious meals that cater to each resident’s dietary needs and preferences. We offer a variety of options, and meals are a highlight of the day, designed to bring people together over good food.
What if I need care for only a short period?
We offer respite care for short stays, whether you’re recovering from an illness, surgery, or simply need a break. Respite residents receive the same level of care as long-term residents, including access to all facilities and activities.
What qualifications do your care teams have?
All our care staff receive comprehensive training, including specialised dementia care training accredited by City & Guilds. We continuously support staff with ongoing development to ensure they provide the best possible care.
