Alexander House Officially Opens Morris Allan Suites

Alexander House Care Home in Crossgates has officially opened its newly refurbished Morris Allan Suites, celebrating both a fresh new chapter for the home and the remarkable legacy of one of its original residents.

Resident, Isobel Buchan officially opens the new Morris Allan Suites at Alexander House Care Home, surrounded by smiling staff

Residents, relatives and invited guests gathered on Monday 3rd August to mark the occasion, with long-time Alexander House resident Isobel Buchan officially opening the suites by cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

Guests enjoyed homemade cakes and refreshments before taking a tour of the beautifully renovated accommodation, which has been thoughtfully themed with subtle photographic touches in tribute to Morris Allan's lifelong passion for photography.

At Alexander House, every person has a story worth remembering. Naming the suites after Morris Allan reflects both his special place in the home's history and his remarkable contribution to the wider community.

Before becoming a resident at Alexander House, Morris built an internationally recognised career as a photographer. His images documented life across Fife for decades, but he is perhaps best known for capturing one of the world's earliest photographs of Sputnik passing over Dunfermline Abbey in 1958 – an image that was reproduced around the world and became synonymous with the dawn of the Space Age.

Although Morris's daughters Judy and April were unable to attend the official opening, they visited the suites the week prior and were delighted by the tribute to their father.

What lovely suites they are and we are touched by the effort you've gone to, to make them so smart. Dad would be very proud to have his name on them.

Adding an even more personal touch, the family have kindly offered to donate a copy of Morris's famous Sputnik photograph, which will become part of the artwork displayed within the suites, creating a lasting connection between Morris's legacy and the home he was proud to call his own.

Opening the Morris Allan Suites has been a very special milestone for everyone at Alexander House. We wanted to create more than just beautifully refurbished accommodation – we wanted to celebrate the story of someone who was part of our home's history. Morris dedicated his life to capturing moments that mattered, and it's a privilege that his legacy will continue to inspire residents, families and visitors for years to come.
