On Tuesday 11th September Beechwood Care Home scooped the CAPA (Care about Physical Activity) award for the 'Community Connections' category.
The aim of the CAPA Programme (a Care Inspectorate incentive) is to encourage people experiencing care to move more and demonstrate how little things can make a huge difference to everyone’s health and well-being and enjoyment of life.
The CAPA awards provide an opportunity to celebrate significant achievements across all types of care services and people experiencing care who participated in the 18-month improvement programme.
There were a total of five award categories available for nomination, which represented all areas of the CAPA Programme such as culture and team to intergenerational activities.
Beechwood were nominated for the 'Community Connections' award for their active role in the local area; from setting up their own dementia-friendly walking group to joining local community groups that encourage movement and creativity, to exercise groups. The home have formed strong relationships with everyone from North Lanarkshire Culture to the Scottish Opera in a bid to ensure the residents get a chance to network with others, and enjoy some of their favourite pastimes, like singing and dancing.
Involvement in these community groups has broken down many preconceived barriers, which has allowed the residents at Beechwood to be viewed as valued members of the local community.
The judges were able to see how residents had used the walking group, Memory Spinners, local exercise and yoga sessions and so many more community based activities to form new support networks. The team at Beechwood were also able to evidence how the time spent outside of the home had given the care staff and activities team the opportunity to bond with residents on a more personal level.
Being part of community groups is now part of the culture at Beechwood and has shaped their normal weekly activities. Cathy, the manager and her team have seen how many of the residents have noticeably benefitted from the interaction and activity. There have been some clear improvements to see in terms of their day to day walking, balance, ability, general well-being and mood.
Cathy said "I am overwhelmed that Beechwood have won this award, it has been so rewarding to see how excited the team have been about our win, and how all their hard work has paid off! I know how competitive these types of awards can be so feel completely grateful and proud that we have been chosen as the winners of the Community Connections award."
