What is respite care?
Respite care can be described as a particular type of short term care, which would normally be arranged by local health and social care professionals, with an aim to help people have as much independence as possible. Respite care is mostly offered to older people to help them avoid any hospital admissions, to keep them independent after a hospital stay, and/or to help prevent a permanent stay at a care or nursing home.
What sort of help is available for people that require respite care?
Initial crisis response
An initial assessment will be undertaken and referrals for short-term care will be offered, this can normally be under 24 hours, to assess if there is an urgent need for safe home care, or if admission to a care home for a short stay is required.
Respite care at home
A care plan can be arranged at the home of the person, or one can be put into place at a care home. This would always involve a team of qualified nurses and other trained professionals.
Respite care - bed-based
Care plans are formulated and put into place at a care home or at a hospital.
Reablement services
A care plan for someone who requires respite care can be put into place at their home. A qualified team of professionals will work with the individual to help the person safely re-learn the everyday tasks they used to complete, whilst giving them more independence.
