Choosing a residential home or a nursing home
A number of care homes can give you the option of residential care or nursing care. It is possible that these homes are set up and run by a charity, a private company, a voluntary company, or maybe by the local council.
About care at a residential home
Residential care refers to long-term care given to adults or children who stay in a residential setting rather than in their own home or family home; as this may not be possible now, or not the best option for the person.
Types of residential care can vary depending on the person's individual requirements and needs. Residential care homes supply round the clock, 24 hour care and supervision in the form of; qualified teams and staff, in-house accommodation, including meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks), in-house laundering of personal items of clothing (except dry cleaning), daily activities within the home and the provision of care and support agreed on admission to meet the prospective residents’ assessed needs.
About care at a nursing home
Nursing homes provide all the same personal care as residential homes, along with having enough trained and qualified nurses on hand for more specialist care. Nursing homes can sometimes provide care and support to residents who have physical disabilities and/or learning disabilities. Qualified nurses will be on hand in nursing homes to assist individuals who may have complex medical conditions.
