What is the difference between a nursing home and a care home?
Many people are sometimes unaware that there is a difference between nursing care in a care home and residential care in a care home. They both supply round the clock, 24 hour care and supervision in the form of; qualified teams and staff, in-house accommodation, including meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks), in-house laundering of personal items of clothing (except dry cleaning), daily activities within the home and the provision of care and support agreed on admission to meet the prospective residents’ assessed needs.
Nursing Homes
With nursing homes, a Registered Nurse (RN) will be present in the home at all times, providing specialist nursing care for those who require it. Nursing care is recommended for residents that often require special types of medication and specialist care. A registered nurse will be on hand to monitor a person's condition and will also be trained to spot anything that may need to be escalated to a doctor or medical team. Those who suffer from dementia will possibly need specialist care.
Nursing homes, generally have more advanced facilities and equipment for helping and moving residents, including supplying specialist beds, hoists and other necessary equipment.
Care Homes
Often known as residential homes, care homes provide individual care and accommodation 24 hours a day.
A district nurse can be called on at times for specialist tasks such as difficult dressings and administering injections, when required. Staff will be suitably qualified as Care Assistants, helping residents with mobility, washing and dressing, personal hygiene, eating and drinking, and chaperoning social events and outings.
