What does end of life care mean?

End of life care is the term used for people who are approaching the last years and/or months of their lives.

End of life care is set up to help give them and their family, as much comfort and support as possible, allowing them to pass away with the greatest dignity; respecting their needs and wishes as they come to the end of their life.

People who require end of life care, will have tailored care plans put in place either at a care home, in their own home, in a hospital, or at a hospice.

The care should be individual to the needs and wishes of each person and reviewed and updated to incorporate any changes to their situation. Qualified nursing and care teams should show honesty, kindness and respect when caring for a person who is needing end of life care.

If the person is in either a care home or their own home, their GP will have main responsibility for the care provided. In the last few days of life, a doctor should be available to regularly visit to offer help and advice to the person concerned and their family.

What does palliative care mean?

Palliative care is included in end of life care. This would effectively be care and pain management for a person with an incurable illness. A care package may involve spiritual, social and psychological support, with an aim to make the person feel as comfortable as possible. Palliative care, not only takes into consideration the illness and its symptoms, but also the person as a whole.

Specialist care teams can consist of various qualified staff, including trained palliative care nurses, occupational therapists, palliative medicine trained consultants and physiotherapists; they will be able to advise and instruct other palliative care professionals, when necessary.

To all the staff at Almond View - a big thank you for looking after Mum, with such kindness and dedication. Despite living 400 miles away, I always had a good feeling that she was in good hands. Bankview Care Home

Thank you for the excellent level of care that my father, Frank Boyle, has received. Bankview demonstrated for us the template for a care home and how it should feel and be run. Friendly, welcoming, excellent care levels, length of time staff remain loyal to the home and above all a clear and comforting atmosphere of great leadership.

K Macdonald in memory of my Aunt Jean

I can't exaggerate the admiration I have for the management and staff of Craigielea. I've never experienced so much patience, coaxing, kindness and care. These people share their lives and emotions, laugh and cry and mourn for the people who entrust themselves to care.

J Ellis in memory of Steve

The staff talked about my best friend being an inspiration to them, despite his illness It made me change my approach with him, instead of being despondent and sad, I spoke with him the way we had always been with each other. The staff saw him as a person.
