About people living with dementia
People that require dementia care may have many different symptoms, these can include loss of day-to day memory, difficulty remembering recent events, slower speed of thought, speaking difficulties and problem solving issues.
Changes in mood may occur, such as being anxious, withdrawn, irritable or frustrated. It may also be that they have lost an interest in social events and find it hard to mix with other people.
They may be having hallucinations or delusions and can often also have trouble controlling their emotions.
Sometimes they will not understand certain situations and may not be aware of their surroundings. Help from family and friends with making any decisions, will usually be necessary.
Getting a diagnosis
If you or your family member are worried this is causing your loved one difficulties with daily life functions, it is best to seek advice from your local doctor. There is currently no cure for dementia, but if diagnosed early and with the correct treatment and help, a care plan can be put in place to help them live a more active and fulfilled life.
There are various causes of dementia
Alzheimer's disease
Is the most common, caused by abnormal proteins around brain cells.
Vascular dementia
This is when the the supply of oxygen to the brain is restricted, caused by thin or blocked blood vessels, brain cells can become damaged or die.
Mixed dementia
A combination of different types of dementia.
Dementia with Lewy bodies
Lewys bodies are abnormal structures that form in brain cells, causing them to die.
Frontotemporal dementia (including Pick’s disease)
This is when there is damage to the part of the brain at the front and the side. This is caused by areas of abnormal proteins forming inside brain cells, making them die off.
